Distilled on the rugged south coast of Islay since 1815, it has earned a worldwide reputation for its powerful peat smoke, maritime influence and distinctive medicinal character that sets it apart from every other Scotch whisky.

Founded by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig has remained true to traditional whisky-making methods for over two centuries. The distillery continues to malt a portion of its own barley on traditional floor maltings before drying it over Islay peat fires, creating the bold smoky character that has become its signature.

Matured for ten years in carefully selected American oak ex-bourbon barrels, Laphroaig develops an exceptional balance between intense peat smoke and layers of vanilla, sweet malt, coconut and oak. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean, nearby peat bogs and the soft waters of the Kilbride Stream all contribute to the whisky’s unmistakable coastal personality.

Laphroaig became one of the few Scotch whiskies legally sold in the United States during Prohibition after being classified as a medicinal spirit because of its distinctive iodine-rich character. Today it proudly continues its heritage as one of the world’s most celebrated peated whiskies and remains the only Scotch whisky to hold a Royal Warrant granted by the then Prince of Wales.
