Indonesia Tells Elephant Rides to Pack Their Trunks! 🐘

There’s some wonderful news for elephants in Indonesia — and this time, tourists can enjoy these magnificent animals without climbing onto their backs.

Indonesia has moved to end elephant riding at conservation and tourism facilities across the country, marking a major step forward for animal welfare and more responsible wildlife tourism.

For years, elephant rides have been a familiar sight at tourist attractions. But behind the holiday photographs lies a serious welfare issue. Carrying tourists and taking part in repeated rides can prevent elephants from spending their days doing the things that come naturally to them.

Now, the emphasis is changing.

Instead of being ridden, elephants can be given more opportunities to graze, bathe, explore their surroundings and socialise with other elephants — while visitors can still experience the extraordinary privilege of seeing them up close.

And that could make for an even better experience.

Watching an elephant splash in water, forage for food or simply interact with its herd allows people to appreciate these remarkable animals for what they really are, rather than treating them as a tourist attraction.

The new approach also sends an important message to the tourism industry: protecting wildlife and creating memorable visitor experiences don’t have to be opposing ideas.
