TEN OUT OF TEN!
19-Year-Old Erin Brooks Makes Waves in Fiji With a Perfect Ride
There are good days at the beach — and then there are days when you ride one of the biggest waves of the day and the judges decide there is literally nothing they can mark you down for.
For 19-year-old Erin Brooks — born in Texas, raised in Hawaii and now representing Canada on the world stage — that day came at Cloudbreak in Fiji.
Competing in the opening round of the 2026 Fiji Pro, Brooks took on one of the most famous — and demanding — waves in professional surfing.
She began her heat against Australia’s Sophie McCulloch in impressive fashion, scoring an 8.00 with a series of sharp turns.
Then an altogether bigger wave arrived.
Brooks took off deep, tucked herself inside the enormous barrel and disappeared behind a wall of turquoise water.
For a few breathtaking seconds, it looked as though the wave might swallow her.
Instead, she kept going.
And going.
Then, to the delight of everyone watching, Brooks came flying out of the barrel.
The judges’ verdict?
A Perfect 10.
Combined with her earlier 8.00, it gave Brooks a heat total of 18.00 out of a possible 20 — the highest women’s score of the opening day.
Brooks later described it as the “best heat of my life.”
Perhaps even more remarkable was her admission that, while travelling through the barrel, she wasn’t entirely convinced she was going to make it out.
She thought the wave was about to catch her.
Instead, as Brooks put it, it simply “let me through.”
And there was something particularly fitting about her spectacular performance in Fiji.
Brooks had arrived at Cloudbreak fresh from victory at the Tahiti Pro, where she had claimed her first Championship Tour win as a full-time competitor.
She also knew Cloudbreak rather well.
Back in 2024, aged just 17 and competing as a wildcard, Brooks had already won the Fiji event.
Two years later, she was back — and apparently even more comfortable inside some of the most intimidating waves on the planet.
But the Perfect 10 wasn’t the end of the story.
Brooks continued through the competition, defeating Olympic champion Caroline Marks, Vahine Fierro and five-time world champion Carissa Moore on her way to the final.
And when the Fiji Pro came to an end, Erin Brooks was champion once again.
Her second Fiji title also gave the 19-year-old consecutive Championship Tour victories in Tahiti and Fiji.
Not bad for someone who, midway through that extraordinary wave, was wondering whether she was about to be knocked off her board.
Sometimes the perfect moment comes when you simply hold your nerve — and ride it all the way through.
