
Balloons have been part of celebrations for generations, bringing colour to birthdays, weddings and parties around the world. But once the celebrations are over, they can leave behind an environmental problem that lasts considerably longer than the occasion itself.
Now, researchers in Britain believe they may have found a better way.
Scientists at Imperial College London have developed Bioloon, an innovative balloon material designed to provide the familiar look and feel of a traditional latex balloon while breaking down far more readily after use.
The breakthrough centres on natural rubber latex. Conventional latex balloons undergo a process known as vulcanisation, which uses sulphur and other chemicals to give the rubber its strength and elasticity. The team behind Bioloon has developed an alternative approach that allows the material to retain the properties needed for a balloon while improving its ability to biodegrade.
Tests have produced encouraging results, with the new material designed to break down naturally in environments including soil and seawater rather than remaining as long-lasting litter.
It may sound like a relatively small innovation, but its potential impact is anything but small. Billions of balloons are produced around the world each year, and discarded balloons can find their way into rivers, seas and countryside, where fragments may pose a danger to wildlife.
A balloon that performs its job during the celebration and then returns to nature much more quickly could therefore make a meaningful difference.
And the technology may eventually have uses far beyond parties. The researchers believe the same approach to natural latex could potentially be adapted for other rubber products, opening the door to more sustainable alternatives in areas ranging from disposable gloves to medical applications.
The team is now working towards commercialising the technology, with hopes that Bioloon products could reach the market in the coming years.
It is a wonderfully simple idea: keep the balloons, keep the celebrations and keep the colour — but leave far less behind when the party is over.
Sometimes helping the planet doesn’t require abandoning the things we enjoy. It simply requires finding a better way to make them.
