CUPID’S ARROW TURNS INTO 100 MILLION VOLTS!
Cupid has been known to strike when people least expect it. But for one American couple, his usual bow and arrow apparently wasn’t quite dramatic enough. This time, he brought a thunderstorm.
What began as a peaceful hike through the beautiful Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin turned into a terrifying fight for survival — and ultimately, one of the most extraordinary love stories imaginable.
In August 2025, Nick Broderick and his girlfriend Eva were enjoying a walk through the forest when the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse.
With rain falling and their car still around two miles away, the couple decided to press on rather than remain exposed in the woods.
Then Eva asked a question that would prove remarkably prophetic.
What if they were struck by lightning?
Moments later, an enormous crack of thunder shattered the air.
Lightning had struck a nearby tree, sending a powerful electrical current through the ground and into both hikers.
Eva remembered feeling electricity surge through her feet. When she turned towards Nick, the sight was horrifying.
He was lying motionless on his back, his face turning blue. He wasn’t breathing.
A Race Against Time
In an isolated stretch of forest, with poor mobile reception and no easy way to tell emergency services their exact location, Eva faced a situation few people could imagine.
But rather than surrender to panic, she acted.
After contacting emergency services, she began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), desperately trying to keep the man she loved alive.
Rescuers would take approximately 50 minutes to locate the couple.
During that agonising wait, Eva reportedly had to restart Nick’s heart twice.
For nearly an hour, surrounded by trees and with no certainty that help would arrive in time, she refused to give up.
And against extraordinary odds, her determination paid off.
A Heart Worth Fighting For
Nick survived.
After three days in hospital, he was discharged with relatively minor lasting injuries, including some hearing loss in one ear and tendon damage.
Considering the terrifying circumstances, his recovery was remarkable.
But the lightning strike had apparently brought something else into sharp focus.
Nick knew exactly who he wanted beside him for the rest of his life.
The woman who had fought so fiercely to save him.
And shortly after leaving hospital, he asked Eva to marry him.
She said yes.
From Lightning Strike to Wedding Bells
The couple decided that August should no longer be remembered as the month in which they nearly lost everything.
Instead, they would turn it into a celebration of everything they had been given back.
They married almost a year after the lightning strike, transforming the anniversary of their ordeal into a celebration of love, survival and second chances.
Eva’s extraordinary actions were also recognised by the Palmyra Fire Department, which presented her with a lifesaving award.
And despite everything they endured, the couple have managed to retain a rather wonderful sense of humour.
Eva has joked that Nick can’t leave her now — after all, she brought him back from the dead, so he’s rather stuck with her.
It’s difficult to argue with that particular marriage contract.
Love Really Can Be Electrifying
Lightning is one of nature’s most powerful and unpredictable forces. A single bolt can carry an electrical potential of around 100 million volts, although the voltage involved in Nick and Eva’s particular ordeal was not measured.
Yet perhaps the most powerful force in this story wasn’t the lightning at all.
It was the determination of one woman who refused to lose the person she loved.
A walk in the woods became a fight for life. A terrifying afternoon became a marriage proposal. And an anniversary that might have been filled with sadness became a wedding celebration.
Cupid may have traded his arrow for a lightning bolt, but this time, love had the final say.
And that’s one couple who can genuinely say there was a spark between them.

Editor’s note: The reference to 100 million volts reflects a commonly cited approximate voltage for lightning, not a measurement of the strike experienced by the couple.
