From struggling through a kilometre to taking on one of the world’s most famous stretches of water
Thirteen-year-old Will is preparing for a challenge that would make most adults think twice — swimming in the English Channel as part of a charity relay.
And what makes his story particularly remarkable is where he started.
When Will first began training, it took him 38 minutes to swim just one kilometre.
After a year of cold-water plunges, early mornings, late-night swims, pool sessions and land training, he has transformed his performance.
That same kilometre now takes him just 17 minutes.
That improvement hasn’t come easily. Will and the other pupils taking part have had to complete timed trials and ice swims as part of their preparation for the Channel.
But for Will, this isn’t simply about swimming faster.
He admitted that when he first tried to make the team, he wasn’t sure he would succeed. Support from his fellow pupils and head teacher helped build his confidence.
“It’s been a team effort, that’s the most important thing.”
Will said the swimmers have learned to rely on and encourage one another throughout their training.
Swimming for something bigger ❤️
The pupils from Beech Hall School in Macclesfield are undertaking the relay in support of Mencap.
The school has organised English Channel swims every year since 2021 and has already raised more than £150,000 for the charity.
This year’s team hopes to add another £30,000 to that extraordinary total.
Head teacher James Allen says the experience has benefits far beyond the water, helping pupils develop resilience and confidence that carries through into the classroom.
The team’s Channel attempt is planned for this weekend, although—as you’d expect with a challenge like this—the final timing depends on the weather and tides.
From a 38-minute kilometre to preparing for the English Channel in just a year.
Whatever happens when they hit the water, Will and his teammates have already achieved something worth celebrating.
