A new £3.6 million air ambulance base at Southampton Airport is helping Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance get its lifesaving teams to patients faster — with almost every patient across the region now potentially reachable within just ten minutes of take-off.
The new operational base is the result of an extraordinary fundraising effort supported by communities across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, bringing the charity’s helicopter, doctors, paramedics and operational teams together at Southampton Airport.
It is a move that could make a crucial difference when every minute counts.
Around 70 per cent of the charity’s call-outs take place in the southern part of its region. From its new location, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance says its medical teams can reach almost every patient within ten minutes of becoming airborne — compared with around 20 minutes previously.
For patients facing the most serious medical emergencies, those minutes can be invaluable.
The charity’s doctors and specialist paramedics respond to around four incidents every day, bringing hospital-level emergency care directly to people who need it.
And none of it comes cheaply.
A single mission can cost as much as £4,748, with the charity relying on donations to keep its lifesaving service operating.
A Community Effort
The new base represents far more than a change of address.
It is the physical result of thousands of people choosing to support a service they hope they will never need.
The £3.6 million fundraising campaign has allowed the charity to establish a purpose-built operational home in a location designed to improve the speed and efficiency of its emergency response.
The new Southampton Airport base officially opened in June, marking a major milestone for an organisation whose crews routinely respond to some of the most serious incidents across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
And the story behind the move has itself received national recognition.
An Award-Winning Journey
The charity documented its journey to the new base in the film Operation Airbase: Coming to a Town Near You.
The film went on to win Gold in the People’s Choice category at the Smiley Charity Film Awards, celebrating both the project and the people who helped make it possible.
It is a fitting accolade for a campaign built around communities coming together to improve emergency care for their region.
But the real prize is measured in something much more important than trophies.
It is measured in minutes.
When a patient is critically ill or seriously injured, getting highly trained doctors and paramedics to them five or ten minutes sooner can mean treatment begins that much earlier.
Thanks to £3.6 million raised by supporters, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance now has a base designed to help make exactly that happen.
