Sometimes the best good news doesn’t begin with good news at all.
Just two weeks ago, British event rider Gemma Stevens was dealing with one of the lowest points of her career.
Representing Great Britain at the World Championships in Aachen, Gemma and Flash Cooley were eliminated on the cross-country after three refusals. Although the British team went on to win gold, Gemma was devastated by her own result.
She later admitted that the experience had been incredibly difficult to process. But there was only one thing she could do.
Pick herself up and ride again.
And what happened next was rather special.
An Old Friend Called Alfie
Waiting in the wings was Chilli Knight, affectionately known as Alfie.
This isn’t simply another horse in Gemma’s yard. Their story stretches back 16 years — Gemma has known him since he was a foal.
Bred by his owners Chris and Lisa Stone, Alfie and Gemma already had a five-star victory to their name, having won the special one-off Bicton CCI5* in 2021.
But there was still something missing.
One of the BIG Bs.
Badminton and Burghley are names that mean something rather special in British eventing. Winning either is the sort of achievement riders spend their careers dreaming about.
At 41, after 15 years competing at the highest level, Gemma was still chasing that dream.
Burghley Begins
Gemma and Alfie started their Burghley campaign with a dressage score of 29.6.
Not bad for a horse Gemma jokingly says can’t trot.
Then came Saturday.
Burghley’s cross-country course is legendary: huge fences, relentless terrain and very little opportunity for horse or rider to relax.
Gemma and Alfie didn’t merely get around it.
They flew.
They were one of only two combinations to finish inside the optimum time, putting them into the lead ahead of Sunday’s final showjumping.
But there was one moment when their Burghley dream could very easily have disappeared.
“I’ve Got This”
At the formidable Leaf Pit, things didn’t quite go according to plan.
Alfie put an unexpected extra stride in, leaving the pair an enormous distance from the next element.
Gemma shouted.
She prayed.
There may also have been some language unsuitable for a family website.
And Alfie jumped.
Gemma later described him as effectively turning into Pegasus, before telling him how much she loved him when they landed safely.
It was a tiny moment in a three-day competition, but perhaps it explains their partnership better than any result sheet ever could.
Sixteen years together.
When one needed the other, Alfie simply said, in Gemma’s wonderful interpretation:
“It’s okay, Mum, I’ve got this.”
One Final Round
On Sunday, Gemma entered the showjumping arena in the lead.
There was breathing room on the scoreboard, but nothing about the situation felt comfortable.
Alfie had previously had five fences down in the final phase at Badminton in 2025. Gemma later admitted that she had felt horrendous that morning and was shaking as she rode into the arena.
Then the first fence came.
Clear.
The second.
Clear.
And they just kept going.
Chilli Knight jumped clear.
Gemma Stevens had won the 2026 Defender Burghley Horse Trials.
Not only had they won, they had completed the entire competition on their original dressage score of 29.6 — the only combination in the field to finish on its dressage score.
Their winning margin was an extraordinary 13.4 penalties.
From Heartbreak to a BIG B
Two weeks.
That’s all that separated one of the lowest moments of Gemma Stevens’ career from one of the greatest.
Afterwards, Gemma spoke about the importance of resilience in sport: you have to find a way to pick yourself up and carry on.
And this time, waiting on the other side was the victory she’d spent years dreaming about.
A first Burghley.
A second five-star victory for the horse she’s known since he was a foal.
And finally, a BIG B.
There are trophies and scores and prize money, but perhaps the loveliest part of today’s story was much simpler than any of those.
It was a rider celebrating with the little horse who had just given her everything he had.
